New look for my Blog and plans for my garden

It's been a while since I checked out my blog page and there have been a lot of changes in the site. I really like my new choice for a layout page. I hope to come back here more often.

Seems like my life of retirement has settled down into a routine of reading paperback novels or downloading books and reading from my nook, visiting with my family and getting ready for Spring! My daffodils are in bloom and I have pruned my grapevines. I am making plans for a vegetable garden this year. I missed the experience last year because I was feeling lazy (I guess).....Anyway, I am going to use a new method of planting in squares that I read about in Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew, published in 1981. Been out for a while, but I am just now getting around to reading it. The book is about a system for gardening, one that is so simple and easy that anyone can enjoy a weed-free garden all year, and produce a continuous harvest. It basically states that we can have a simple garden that wil produce a lot of harvest in a small space.

In square foot gardening, you build up your garden in a series of squares which are 12" x 12", an area of 1 sq. ft. You plant a different vegetable, flower, or herb in each square instead of being planted in rows with extra space between them. The plants are placed in a square, the same distance apart in all directions. I really like the idea and will be blogging more about this as my plans progress.

My favorite arena2 football team, the Arkansas Twisters

My son, Scott, and I went to the Twisters Meet and Greet last night at Alltel to pick up our season tickets to the 2009 Season of Arena2 Football. We are so excited about the season starting.

We decided before we left that we were just going to pick up our tickets and see who was there, check out the team merchandise they had for sale and then go to El Chico and eat Mexican food. When we first got there, everyone was inside the dining room eating, but we did get to see a few of the team members even though they were not dressed in their uniform and it was hard to pick them out of the people mingling around. We talked to some of the Booster Club members.....we haven't signed up yet this year, but probably will.

We have joined the Booster Club the last 3 or 4 years but aren't very active members. Oh, we do go to the tailgate parties before the games and hang out there for a while and talk to the members and players that drop by. Maybe, now that my daughter, Pam, is a season ticket holder, she would go with me to some of the activities. Scott doesn't usually care about getting into large crowds and he likes his weekends to do what he wants. I don't blame him for that. Anyone who knows Scott can figure out the reason for that. He is an avid Twisters fan though. I can definitely say that about him.

So is my daughter, Pam, and my grandkids, Gage and Lexi. We are season ticket holders and have been for the last 3 years. Before that, I would get tickets from my boss at work. They always had tickets available for employees who enjoyed the game. I was in his office every week that the Twisters played, asking for 3 to 5 tickets, whatever he would give me.

We have all gone on several trips to away games. We have gone to Tulsa OK, I think 3 times; Shreveport LA - once; and last year to Oklahoma City. OK. We are planning at least two trips this year to Shreveport and Tulsa. I can't wait! We always have a good time - win or lose. Winning is best!

So, Saturday, March 28th, 7 pm, we will be at Alltel, screaming and yelling for our Twisters to win. It is great fun. Try it, you might like it.

My Birthday!

Today was my birthday (again). Seems like they come around pretty fast these days. Anyway, it was a good day. I got a lot of BD greetings from my freinds by email, phone calls and on facebook, which I just signed up for a couple of days ago. I am going to enjoy keeping in touch with them, and hopefully finding new friends too.

My kids and grandkids spent the afternoon with me. We went to the flea market and spent a couple of hours there. Then we returned to my house and had birthday cake and ice cream. We had a good time together. It was not anything special, but just being with them is special to me.

We had already gotten together on Friday night and went out to eat at Western Sizzlin' so this was kind of a two-day celebration.

Tonight, I am catching up on reading my emails and watching the Academy Awards. It seems like a re-run of the Golden Globes....same people and movies nominated...so far the winners are the same too.

Oh well, tomorrow is the beginning of another week. Hope the weather is a bit warmer than it has been this weekend. Sunny, but cold. Almost March and I have got to start planning what I will plant in my vegetable garden.
